I take my dog Vanya out for three walks a day. She loves our Glendale neighborhood. Sometimes we trek from California Street up Jackson to Mountain Street (a nice slow incline begins once you're north of Glenoaks). Sometimes we just stay between Glendale Avenue (to our east), Brand Boulevard (to our west), Broadway (to our south), and Doran (to our north), going back and forth, up and down, Pac Man-style. As nice as these walks are, sometimes my dog needs (as Cesar would say) to "discharge" more energy than a walk permits. When that happens, I know that there are plenty of parks and trails within 30 minutes of Glendale.

If you're looking for a location to get out and about with your pooch, the Pasadena Humane Society has a great listing of local dog parks and hikes.

Glendale is also home to two fantastic animal hospitals: the Glendale Small Animal Hospital and VCA Arden Animal Hospital. I can say firsthand that the veterinarians at both of these establishments are way above par in the areas of professional competence and doggy bedside manner. Both also offer boarding.

Finally, a confession: I don't really take my dog on three walks a day. I wish I could, but I keep long hours as a teacher downtown. That's why I have a dog walker for the day shift. I was recently lucky enough to come across an excellent and affordable dog walking service called Roll Over Rover. I knew I had found a great service when both the owner, Yvette, and my personal walker, Jen, came together for the meet and greet, stayed 45 minutes, and asked me if I wanted my walker to water any plants (free of charge) each time she visits! I'm a bachelor and I don't have plants because I kill them with my cynical energy and exhausted teacher aura, but it was nice to be asked!
